Name: Dimitri Belikov
Canon: Vampire Academy
Original or Alternate Universe: OU
Canon Point: Frostbite (Book2), Chapter 10
Number: RNG Me!

Setting: Vampire Academy Wikia Link

History:

Dimitri is the second child and only son to an unnamed and abusive Moroi father and Olena Belikova. He was born in a small town called Baia, in Russa, and it was a Dhampir commune, meaning it was inhabited by dhampir bloodwhores and their children. He was raised there, and he had a nice childhood other than the times when his father came to visit his mother.

Though his father was only ever particularly abusive towards his mother, and it certainly isn’t unheard of in this setting for dhampir ‘bloodwhores’ to be mistreated, Dimitri eventually became infuriated with his father and, at the age of only thirteen, he beat his father to the point where they never saw him again, likely because he was too afraid to return. Though dhampirs are generally stronger than Moroi, it was still somewhat impressive for a kid his age.

It was always assumed that, being the son of the family, Dimitri would eventually go study to become a Guardian to the Moroi. He attended St. Basils in Russia, and became good friends with a Moroi royal named Ivan Zeklos. Dimitri passed his classes with flying colors, receiving high marks and prestige, and his best friend became his charge upon graduation.

His career as a Guardian is both successful and marred by sadness. Within the first few years after schooling, Dimitri kills six Stirgoi, but while he is on vacation, his friend Ivan and his other Guardian are murdered by Strigoi. Dimitri is reassigned and sent to America, where he is given the task of tracking down a lost Moroi princess and bringing her back to St. Vladimir’s Academy.

It takes him a year to track them down, and that’s where the books officially begin.

Dimitri finds Vasilisa “Lissa” Dragomir, the runaway princess, and her best friend/guardian-in-training, Rose Hathaway, living near a college campus in Portland, Oregon. After apprehending them and bringing them back to their school, Dimitri is assigned as Lissa’s Guardian. He also is given the task of giving Rose extra private lessons in order to catch her up to the rest of her class after her absence. Having seen her in action previously, he knows she has talent and promise, and does as asked without complaint.

He is hard on her in their training sessions, but it is because he wants her to live up to her potential and become good enough to do what she wants to do; protect Lissa after she graduates. He also attempts to keep her out of trouble, breaking up a hook up gone wrong without alerting the headmistress, as well as helping her deal with some of Lissa’s growing instability.

Rose quickly catches up to the rest of the class, and it is a combination of her own talents and Dimitri’s guidance and skill that helps her achieve it. During this time, it is likely that Dimitri has already developed some romantic feelings for Rose, though he hides his emotions exceptionally well and knows perfectly that such a thing would be completely unacceptable.

However, during the dance near the end of the novel, Rose comes to his room wearing a necklace charmed with a lust spell, and they nearly sleep together in the process. However, Dimitri figures out what is going on and puts a stop to it, which allows Rose to tell him that Lissa had been kidnapped.

They race off to save her, along with a few other Guardians, and manage to free her from the clutches of her uncle Victor, who wanted to use her abilities to heal himself of his debilitating condition. While Rose is visiting him in jail, his daughter, purposely turned Strigoi, attacks her. Dimitri comes to the rescue, saving Rose and staking Natalie.

Afterward, Rose and Dimitri have a conversation about their feelings for one another, and Dimitri makes it clear that a relationship is impossible and a bad idea. If he allows himself to love her, he will impulsively try to save her instead of the person their both intended to protect, Lissa. Rose seems to agree, and they leave it at that. For now.

As the next novel begins, Dimitri is taking Rose to the home of Moroi royals to meet the famous Guardian that lives there so that she can take her Qualifier Exam. Instead, however, they are met with a blood massacre, everyone in the building having been killed by a group of Strigoi.

After returning to the Academy, Dimitri finally teaches Rose how to use a Silver Stake, whereas previously he was more getting her into shape and teaching her hand-to-hand and defense. In addition, he introduces her to his old friend, Tasha, whom also happens to be Lissa’s boyfriend’s Aunt and the survivor of a Strigoi attack.

Dimitri spends a good deal of time with Tasha, leading Rose to believe that there might be something romantic between them, which is not entirely unfounded. Tasha is indeed very interested in Dimitri, and though he is quite fond of her, his heart belongs to a few other things (like his duty….and Rose, though he’s still emotionally distancing himself from her as best he can).

The previously mentioned attack on the royal Badica family puts St. Vladimir’s on high alert, and they decide to send all the students to a well-protected ski lodge owned by a Moroi family for the holidays. It is shortly after this that Dimitri is pulled into the game.

Personality:

The first impression most people get from Dimitri is that, although handsome enough for his looks to be described as ‘god-like,’ he’s somewhat anti-social, stoic, and likes to keep to himself. Further investigation would reveal that these traits are a part of his deep commitment to his duty as a Guardian. In his canon, Guardians are trained for the specific purpose of guarding Moroi, which are ‘good’ vampires. They have the ability to use magic and do not kill people to survive. They are also weaker than dhampirs, which are half-human, half-vampire. Dimitri grew up the way nearly all dhampir do; with the constant mantra that dhampir protect the Moroi, and that to do anything else is close to blasphemy.

Dimitri comes from a somewhat large immediate family, of which he is the only male. Growing up, it was expected that, as a male, he would become a Guardian, while his sisters would raise children. It’s what his mother did when she had her first child, and it was simply the way he was raised. Dimitri never saw this as a burden, however, and has always taken his job seriously and excelled at it.

As such, his honor and his commitment to his duty is one of the most important things to him. He attempts to stay away from the love of his life, Rose, because they are supposed to be destined to guard the same vampire, and he knows he has to be able to protect his assignment before her. If they are in love, he’s not sure he’ll be able to do that, and is afraid that he’ll throw himself in front of Rose instead of the person he’s sworn to protect (in this case, Rose’s best friend Lissa).

Most people also find Dimitri to be incredibly intimidating, though this is mostly because of his sheer size and stoic nature. He’s made of rock hard muscle, and at 6’7”, he’s generally much taller than your average person. His abilities as a fighter are also well known, along with his ability to remain cool under pressure, both of which only add to his fierceness and reputation.

For those that spend enough time with him and gain his love, Dimitri proves to be incredibly gentle, loving, and even romantic. He can be sometimes a bit harsh when he disagrees with Rose, but love is always the reason behind his words, and he always means well. He’s usually even right, and likes to provide otherwise with words of wisdom. Indeed, he is much more mature than your typical 24 year old, as he’s something of an ‘old soul.’ This is in part due to all of the difficult things he’s seen; a Guardian tends to have to grow up much faster than a normal human would, or they won’t survive for long. Their lives are hard and dangerous, and oftentimes rather short, so this isn’t particularly surprising.

He is also a remarkably good friend, loyal to a fault, and a great listener. He isn’t quick to judge or assume, he simply takes what is given to him and makes a logical and well thought out decision. While he doesn’t ignore his emotions, he also doesn’t let them interfere in places where they don’t belong.

Despite him being seemingly unshakable and calm at all times, Dimitri is actually just a near master of control. Inside, he is an incredibly emotional and intense person; he’s just had to learn how to control those things so that he can be as effective as possible. Only very rarely does Dimitri’s temper explode, and when he does it always involves someone he loves very much. For example, he lost control when he was 13; his father, a Moroi lord, was abusive towards his mother, and Dimitri finally snapped and beat the crap out of him. Rose has also been able to bring out his less controlled side with some of her more snarky comments, but that’s because he allows himself to relax some around her.

This is also related to his intense protective streak, as his calm demeanor seems to dissipate most quickly when he feels he needs to protect a loved one. Rose is usually at the receiving end of this protectiveness, and he has on several occasions put himself in harm’s way to help or save her.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:

Dhampirs are faster and stronger than humans and Moroi, though not on as supernatural a level as Strigoi. They are resistant to compulsion in comparison to humans, and also do not generally get typical human illnesses. They heal quicker than normal (though not anywhere near instantaneously), and can take more physical damage. Nearly all of them have had extensive physical training, and are incredible fighters with both melee weapons and hand-to-hand combat. Dimitri is even more prestigious than most Dhampir, making him an incredibly formidable fighter.

Dhampirs do not have any of the weaknesses that vampires suffer from. His other greatest weakness is Rose; if she were in danger, he would literally throw himself in front of bullets to save her. Though he would not be entirely reckless, still attempting to formulate a plan if possible, he would gladly give his life to save hers, and is far more impulsive than normal where she is concerned.

Inventory:

The clothes on his back, which include his long leather duster.

A cell phone.

His silver stake, which is imbued with the four Moroi elements of Fire, Air, Water and Earth. It is used specifically to kill Strigoi, though stab most things in the heart with a weapon and it’ll still die.

Appearance: Dimitri is portrayed in the movie by Danila Kozlovsky.

Dimitri is described as have god-like good looks. He stands at a very tall 6’7”, and is well built and muscular from years of intense physical training. He has shoulder-length brown hair that he sometimes ties back in a ponytail, though strands commonly escape it. He has chocolate brown eyes and his skin would tan easily, though it is somewhat pale due to the hours he keeps with the Moroi.

He also has several tattoos on the back of his neck. One is his promise mark, and he also has seven molnija marks, one for each Stirgoi he has killed.

His favorite article of clothing is his long duster coat, which he wears whenever possible. Generally it is worn over a t-shirt or tank top and jeans, though he also cleans up well when needed.

Log Sample:

You’re always fighting for control. You’re the same as me.

He’d said no. He’d insisted that he’d learned control.

It wasn’t the first time he’d lied to Rose Hathaway.

Dimitri was quiet as he walked through the halls, his expression dark and his stride quick. He needed to get away from her, as far as he could, before he lost control again and turned back to do something they would both later regret.

She was a teenager, impulsive, naïve. He was supposed to be the adult, her mentor, a guiding hand. Instead, he was letting her goad him and tempt him in ways he didn’t think anyone had really ever been capable of before he’d met her. He shouldn’t still be giving her these private lessons, should have arranged to give that job to someone else, but he wanted her to have the best, to be as well prepared as she could be when the time came when it was necessary, and he wasn’t sure he trusted anyone else with that job.

He didn’t think himself a god, not like the whispers of the students said, but he knew he was good. Better than most. And Rose could be too, if she’d just let him teach her instead of…

No, this wasn’t entirely her fault. His own heart carried just as much of the blame, but they both knew their duty. They should be better than this, and if one of them had to be the stronger then it should be him. He’d prided himself on his self-control, after all.

Then again, no one tested it quite like she did.

Dimitri reached his quarters, shut the door a little too loudly, and fell into the chair, his hands catching his head as it dipped down toward his chest.

Perhaps he would take Tasha’s offer. What other choices were left to him?

Comms Sample:

[Dimitri is not particularly over-familiar with technology, though he’s completely capable of handling radio communicators and cellular phones when completely necessary.

Still, this device is a bit more complex and advanced than he’s used to, so it takes him a few moments of fiddling with it, and once he does manage to get the broadcast started, it takes him a few extra seconds before he begins to speak.

His voice is deep, with a light Russian accent.]

My name is Dimitri Belikov. If this message reaches anyone who might be familiar with me, please get in contact as soon as possible.

[His expression is incredibly serious, and there’s a faint sense of worry that stirs in the back of his gaze. He’s confused and concerned, though he hides it far better than a typical person would given the circumstances.]

I am also looking for more information on this predicament I have found myself in. If anyone would be so kind as to assist me in this, I would greatly appreciate it.

[He nods his head in appreciation.]

Thank you.

[And then the feed promptly cuts out.]
